About Them …
The Pink Place is based in Wote Street, Basingstoke and is a relatively new local charity. The Pink Place provides free services to ladies with cancer in the North Hampshire area. These free services include regular counselling sessions, hair services, massages, beauty treatments and also their ‘Wonderful Wig’ services for high quality wigs, offering free fitting, cutting & styling to those ladies who are losing/have lost their hair during their cancer treatment.
The Pink Place was started in 2010 has helped over 200 people with their sessions and although the charity has the support of the breast care unit at Basingstoke Hospital and of the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, they do not receive any funding from them. The Pink Place is 100% reliant on fundraising to pay for their free services and premises so the support of a local company such as The Champion Group is so important to them. For more information please go to http://www.thepinkplace.org.uk/
Their History …
The Pink Place was founded in 2010 by Julia Dingwall and Janis Taylor, two local ladies who spotted the need for this kind of support in the Basingstoke area. Julia, diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, had her hair cut and cared for during and after treatment by Janis, her friend, and owner of Taylors Hair and Beauty Salon. This made a very positive difference to Julia’s confidence and the idea for The Pink Place grew from this.
Julia and Janis decided they would like to have a local centre, away from the hospital, offering free of charge therapies and services to people with breast cancer. Janis was happy to provide the use of Taylor’s on Monday’s and so on 2nd August 2010 The Pink Place was officially opened by Kevin Harris, consultant at the Breast Care Unit Basingstoke and has the support of the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Our fundraising …
The Pink Place have recently moved into their new premises on Wote Street (last month) and although most of the remodelling of their premises has been done (all by volunteers, donations and fundraising) there are still a few areas that need a little help e.g. painting, shelving, taps and basin. They are also hoping to expand their services to help support men and children now they are in their bigger premises.
